Stone Sizani's wife, Portia 'Pankie' Sizani, has been found guilty of fraud and money laundering by the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court. Sizani had created 'ghost teachers' to siphon off R1.2 million.
The wife of ex-ANC Chief Whip and SA ambassador to Germany, Stone Sizani, has been found guilty of fraud and money laundering.
Portia Sizani was found guilty by the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court of 15 counts of fraud and 9 counts of money laundering.
According to the HeraldLIVE, Sizani had used her former position as district coordinator for the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape to siphon off more than R1.2 million.
Sizani had created 'ghost teachers' for the department to pay salaries to, but had pocketed the funds instead.
Numerous witnesses had told the court that assumption of duty forms had been signed off by Sizani, claiming that teachers would start work at various schools in PE.
The state said that Sizani had signed at least 16 of these forms, sending them off to the finance department for payment.
Despite the conviction, Sizani has been released on R5 000 bail and will retain her passport. Sentencing will take place on 1 July.
