The Hawks have raided the home and office of Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Mongameli Bobani. During the raids, a laptop belonging to Bobani's wife was confiscated, although it remains unclear if the raids are connected to any recent arrests made.
The Hawks have carried out a series of raids at both the home and office of Mayor Mongameli Bobani.
The Nelson Mandela Bay mayor's lawyer, Danie Gouws, has confirmed the raids, saying that a laptop belonging to his wife had been confiscated.
Reports claim that they had also attempted to confiscate a cellphone, but that Bobani refused to hand it over.
According to News24, Bobani had cooperated with the Hawks and feels that this is part of a pre-election 'witch hunt'.
The laptop appears to be the only item removed from the premises. A source in the Hawks has reportedly claimed that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation was conducting numerous raids, starting yesterday, against the mayor.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed the raids, claiming that arrests were eminent.
This has resulted in a motion of no confidence against Bobani by the Democratic Alliance.
Five municipality officials have been arrested in connection with the health portfolio Bobani had presided over before taking his position as mayor. It remains unclear if this is connected to the raids.
