Yesterday marked the 1 year anniversary of Winnie Madikizela Mandela’s death and Briefly.co.za asked readers to share what they liked most about her.
Millions of South Africans took time out to pay tribute to Mama Winnie yesterday as it marked the 1 year anniversary of her death.
Briefly.co.za shared some of the highlights from social media as the tributes flooded in.
If ever a public figure polarised opinion then it was Mama Winnie.
Adored by millions as the mother of the nation, but loathed by others for her uncompromising and unapologetic approach.
Love her or hate, she played a huge part in the fight against apartheid and Briefly.co.za readers made their voices heard.
Mbulelo Sithole said, “She was feared by fly by night leaders and stood her ground . Never went to exile faced the enemy with her mouth and finished it. Her comrades sold her for political power and muzzled her.”
Edith Imelda Baronese added, “Her passion for social upliftment and justice, especially the poor and vulnerable.”
Mpume Mtshali commented: “She was beautiful, her dress code and her courage was amazing, to be left by yr husband. Raising kids bt still fighting for freedom.Sifunde okunengi kuye. Akukho soka lingena sici.”
Some took the opportunity to open old wounds.
Hetta Dollery said, “The necklace murderer died on this day.”
Hilton Du Preez added, “The way she pulled her face when Manny(mandela) told her to bugger off and go have a stompie.”
However, the response was extremely positive for the most part.
Adelaide Dickson said, “I like her direct approach, her fearlessness: no matter who you are. She stood for what she believed in and stood her ground, no matter what price she was going to pay for it she was steadfast in her convictions.”
