A chilling video was posted on social media which showed how Solomon Mahlangu and other freedom fighters were executed.
On 6 April, South Africans celebrated the 40th anniversary of Solomon Mahlangu's death. In honour of the late freedom fighter, Panyaza Lesufi shared a video which detailed Mahlangu's hanging.
"Just listen to the chilling story on how #SolomonMahlangu and others were executed for demanding equal rights and our freedom," he captioned the post.
The South African government also took to social media to share photos of their visit to Mahlangu's grave and execution site.
"Minister Nathi Mthethwa at the 40th anniversary of execution of Solomon Mahlangu," the photos were captioned.
Mahlangu was part of the ANC's military wing. He was arrested and charged with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and various counts under the Terrorism Act.
On 6 April 1979, the apartheid government hanged Mahlangu, his last words being:
"Tell my people that I love them and that they must continue the fight, my blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom, Aluta continua."
South Africans were heartbroken and furious over the horrific death Mahlangu was sentenced to, so Briefly.co.za took a look at some of the reactions.
Steven Sedumedi, who goes by the Twitter handle @SedumediSteven, commented: "I really get hurt and destructed when I see how our leaders used to be tortured and killed on our own land... Long leave to their spirits and scarifies they did."
