A clip surfaced on social media which showed UWC cleaners creating a 'red carpet' for the graduates, IOL reported.
Carly Lisa Fani posted the video on Facebook, captioning it:
"UWC cleaners today, making way for graduates to enter the hall using their work aprons as a 'red carpet' for them to walk on. It really takes a village to raise a child. Inimba ibinye. Yhuu abazali!!!"
The video gathered over 96 000 views and more than 2 000 shares since it was posted on social media last week Wednesday.
Briefly.co.za gathered the university said in a statement that the cleaners' celebration of the graduates was "a time of bonding".
"The University of the Western Cape is celebrating the achievements of thousands of its students at its April Graduation 2019, recognising the hard work across all seven faculties. Many of the students come from lives of hardship and they have inspirational stories. This joy is shared by the cleaning staff as they often play a matriarchal role in supporting our students. The university is delighted that this can be a time of bonding and rejoicing as we honour the accomplishments of our graduates," UWC said.
