Meet Aniek: From given 20% chance to survive to graduating Cum Laude

A UCT student who suffered third-degree burns to 95 per cent of her body has defied the odds and will be graduating Cum Laude this month.

Aniek Nieuwenhuis was given only a 20 per cent chance of survival after she suffered serious burns in a gas explosion 15 years ago.

The 24-year-old has since undergone 50 surgical procedures. Today, the art student has completed her tertiary education and will graduate with distinctions.
