A 25-year-old Durbanite has become the youngest graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal to be awarded his PhD in electrical engineering. Sulaiman Saleem Patel achieved the PhD after his master’s thesis was deemed to be at a doctoral level.

Patel registered for his Master's in electronic engineeering. He was 24 when he submitted his Master’s thesis.

The level of work resulted in lecturers recommending he submit it as a PhD.

The young man from Sherwood in Durban, said his first real exposure to the field was when he made the decision in Grade 10 study IT.

He does not come from and affluent family and he had striven to get bursaries.
