It was a day of mixed feelings at the 2019 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon as South African runners scored a win, but one runner collapsed and died during the race. It was the runner's 4th marathon.
A 35-year-old Cape Town male runner collapsed during the 2019 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and sadly passed away.
The Daily Sun reported that paramedics tried to resuscitate him but they couldn't save his life.
The man was an avid runner and this was his 4th marathon. Organizers of the race confirmed the death.
On the other hand, South Africa was made proud when two local runners took the winning spots in the race.
SowetanLIVE reported that 3-time Comrades Marathon champion, Bongumusa Mthembu, won the ultra leg of the men’s section, and Gerda Steyn claimed honours in the women’s section.
Bongumusa beat dust in the eyes of fellow South African, David Gatebe, and Kenyan Justin Cheshire and crossed the finish line in a very good time of 3:08:40.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Gerda finished her race in 03:31:29, followed closely by Mamorallo Tjoka of Lesotho.

While it really is tragic that a man lost his life on this day, it is also a day that Bongumusa and Gerda can be proud of, along with the rest of Mzansi.
