Kwaito music lovers are not impressed with this year's South African Music Awards (Samas) nominees. Kwaito, Gqom and Amapiano music has been thrown into one combined category, and fans feel this is the end of the Kwaito era.
The South African Music Awards (Samas) nominees list has been announced, and it got South African tongues wagging.
While it's awesome that DJ Sbu got a whopping five nominations, social media users are upset that Kwaito music has been put in the same categories as Gqom and Amapiano.
According to TimesLIVE, fans of kwaito music believe that this move brings in the end of the Kwaito music era.
Israel Matseke, actor and Kwaito musician, apparently led the 'complaints committee' on social media who feel the combination of the three genres is a deliberate attempt to end the original Kwaito sound.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the CEO of the Recording Industry of South Africa (Risa), Nhlanhla Sibisi, says this isn't the end of Kwaito at all and that the music genre is evolving.
"Gqom and amapiano are both sub-genres of kwaito. Record labels felt it was important to mention them and recognise the growth kwaito has birthed into the music industry.
"Adding the names to title of the category was our way of recognising the power of kwaito. To say that kwaito is the reason why gqom and amapiano exist and it is important."
The SAMA awards will take place on 1June at Sun City.
Here are the Kwaito/Gqom/Amapiano nominees:
- Busiswa - Summer Life
- Distruction Boyz - It Was All A Dream
