South Africa is buzzing in anticipation of the 2019 general election results, but the recent voter turnout pales in comparison to the epic 1994 one.
While millions are queuing to cast their votes in the general elections on Wednesday, there are many who refuse to make their mark.
Since the epic 1994 elections, there’s been a steady decline in voter turnout, but what are the reasons for this?
Radio 702 shared a comparison between two photos of the same high school, from 1994 and 2019.
The 1994 photo was a common sight across the country in that year as the vast majority of eligible voters took to the polls.
Radio 702’s current photo indicates no queuing line at all. Although social media users questioned the post, the numbers don’t lie.
The Institute for Security Studies revealed a study which looked into the reasons for voter apathy.
The general consensus was that the low turnout is mo due to disillusionment with the current political landscape.
Citizens feel that none of the political parties are equipped to run the country and in their view, prefer not to pick the best from a bad bunch.
