Shanice Moonithan has proven that hard work is the key to success. After young woman's dream to become a pilot ground to a halt, she took it upon herself to find another career path.
Her dream to become a commercial pilot was cut short due to financial constraints and she had to drop out. She did not give up though and has graduated with a National Diploma in Town and Regional Planning Cum Laude from the Durban University of Technology.
She says her journey was not an easy one, after she had to change her career path. She also tragically lost her father and she had to work part-time jobs to finance her studies.
“However, thankfully I was funded with a bursary from the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform in my third year, and currently now for my BTech degree”
The courageous woman said that she is proud of her qualification.
“It is a feeling that is unexplainable, reaching this day did not come easy, it took a lot of hard work, sacrifices, sweat and tears for me to see this day"
Choosing a career in Town and Regional Planning was a natural choice because she excelled in drawing and design in high school. She was also inspired by her need to contribute towards transforming human settlements for the poor in this country.
She attributed her academic success to the support she received from her family. She also had a few words of encouragement for other students:
“Life is not an easy journey, it is the route you take and the people you take it with. Surround yourself with people that believe in you and your dreams and achieving them will prove easier than expected”
