Amidst the flurry of preparation for the 2019 South African Elections, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, suffered the passing of his grandmother, Koko Sarah Malema.
The funeral for Malema’s gogo took place recently and was an emotional affair, with the EFF leader sharing some insight into his relationship with Koko Malema.
While much of the event was centred on the memory of Koko Malema, Malema also made mention of his previous political affiliations to the African National Congress (ANC).
The EFF president explained to the congregation that he promised his grandmother that he would never return to the ANC.
He reiterated this promise to her, addressing her “presence” at the funeral.
Malema relayed a devastating story to those present, about how ANC members once visited his grandmother, bringing death threats against her grandson to her.
The moment provided some insight into Malema's opinions on and feelings towards the current ruling party.
Influential members of the South African community paid their respects to Malema, including Dr Patrice Motsepe.
