The eThekwini branch of the ANC Youth League has called for the resignation of the municipality's mayor, Zandile Gumede. This comes as Gumede and eleven others appeared in court yesterday to answer for charges including fraud, money-laundering and corruption.
The ANCYL is calling for eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede to step down in order for her to defend herself against criminal charges.
Briefly.co.za reported yesterday that Gumede, along with 11 other people, was implicated in numerous charges relating to tenders dished out by the municipality, and had appeared in court to answer for the allegations.
The ANC itself in the region, however, has declined to take any premature action against the mayor, reports eNCA.
Yesterday's proceedings saw Gumede released on R50 000 bail following her arrest for tender fraud.
Hangwani Mulaudzi, speaking on behalf of the Hawks, insists that rushing the case could stand to compromise their efforts:
"For us to rush cases just for the sake of rushing them, it will just compromise everything. We are just dealing with the cases as they come."
The State argued yesterday that Gumede had influenced procedures to ensure specific service providers were appointed.
Gumede, along with the 11 other accused, are due back in court on 8 August.
