WWE has since paid tribute to her through a statement posted on the company's website.

"We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro. WWE offers its condolences to Ashley’s family and friends," the statement said.

Massaro spent three years in the WWE, making her first appearance in 2005 after winning the company's Diva Search.

She is fondly remembered for her appearance at WrestleMania 23 in a match she fought and lost against Melina for the Women's Championship.

After quitting wrestling in 2008, she ventured into reality show and appeared as a contestant on American TV show 'Survivor: China,' but was voted out in the second episode after just six days.

In 2017, she made a return to professional wrestling in Zero1 Professional Wrestling USA, joining former WWE diva Jillian Hall.

Since her demise, tributes have been pouring in, with legendary WWE star, Mick Foley, tweeting:

"This is just awful news - Ashley Massaro is gone. She was only 39. She lived in the same town as me...I loved seeing her around. She was always so nice...and now she’s gone."
