- Hugo Hurtado collapsed minutes after the resumption of the second half of a match of a Bolivian league match
- He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital after suffering a second heart attack
- President of Bolivia has since paid tribute to the match official
The football fraternity in Bolivia has been plunged into mourning after a referee collapsed and died while officiating a league match.
According to Mail Online citing BBC, Victor Hugo Hurtado suffered a heart attack just minutes after the break as he took charge of a clash between Always Ready and Oriented Petrolero.
A team doctor revealed the referee had a heart attack on the pitch, before having another one upon arriving at hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In a footage that has since surfaced on social media, Hurtado can be seen toppling over backwards as play continues, before players from both sides calling on treatment after rushing over.
It is believed the high altitude where the match was hosted may have occasioned the heart attack.
Bolivia president, Evo Morales, has since paid tribute to the match official in a statement posted on Twitter.
"We regret the passing of referee Victor Hugo Hurtado," he tweeted.
"We send our condolences and solidarity to your family, friends and colleagues. Bolivian football is in mourning," he added.
Aways Ready went on to win the match 5-0, scoring all the goals in the second half.
