Nadia Nakai on wig collection: “My looks speak volumes about my swag”

Nadai Nakai’s latest wig was a long blonde hairdo that almost swept the floor. It was so long that she had to have helpers carry it while at a fashion event in Sandton recently.

But not everyone likes wigs. Some people have criticised her hair choices, accusing her of using them to hog tabloid headlines.

But Nadia quickly ended those rumours. She told TshisaLIVE that “As a rapper my looks speak volumes about my swag. I cannot look ordinary.”

Bragga has also been accused of copying US raper Nicki Minaj, who is also known for her colourful and crazy hairstyles.

But Nadia said her looks fall somewhere between Rihanna and Kim Kardashian. Nadia also has beaded box braids, brightly-coloured and frizzy hair and blonde weaves.

The rapper said the wigs and weaves she owns are worth thousands of Rands.

Nadia told TshisaLIVE that the long blonde wig wasn’t the easiest choice ever but she did it for the swag.

“I have dabbled with over-the-top hair colours and textures but [the long blonde wig] is the edgiest choice ever. Though I love the dramatic effect of the hair, I must confess it is too much admin and not functional. It is extremely heavy, not easy to walk around with and it hurts my neck. But this has to be done for the sake of swag.”

She also added that not everyone can rock this kind of hair the way she does. She said it involves confidence, poise and you have to be comfortable in your own skin.

“You have to be able to stomach all kinds of criticism and reviews,” said Nadia.

The rapper also has creative stylists and sponsors on hand to help her with her hair.

“The way I look as an artist is essential to be taken seriously. It is part of the creed.”

Nadia said being a female rapper in a male-dominated music industry had not been easy for her, and part of building her profile was to find a look that would suit her personality the best.

She loves evoking emotions through her looks and believes it is powerful - both “beautiful and very rewarding”.
