- Pravin Gordhan’s actions have been placed under the spotlight following a ruling by Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane
- Mkhwebane allegedly found that Gordhan acted dishonestly when he approved the early retirement of SARS Deputy Commissioner, Ivan Pillay
- However, social media users have questioned Mkhwebane’s judgement based on her previous reports that were set aside
The actions of finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, has come under the microscope following a damning review from Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
Mkhwebane found Gordhan guilty of improper conduct during his first stint as finance minister.
In 2016, a complaint was lodged which questioned the decision by Gordhan to approve the early retirement of SARS Deputy Commissioner, Ivan Pillay.
Mkhwebane’s verdict was that Pillay was not entitled to go on early retirement and receive an early pension payout.
Mkhwebane then instructed President Cyril Ramaphosa to take disciplinary action against Gordhan for his actions.
Many analysts have questioned the timing of the findings – prior to the cabinet announcement.
Twitter user, @AdvBarryRoux, shared the news via twitter and social media users had a lot to say on the matter.
Based on the strong reaction, it was clear that many have lost confidence in Mkhwebane.
However, others seemingly welcomed the ruling.
