Manchester United have reportedly decided to let James Wilson leave on a free transfer when the forward's current deal with the club lapses at the end of June.

According to reports, United decided not to trigger Wilson's one-year extension in his contract, throwing the 23-year-old's future at Old Trafford into doubt.

Wilson joined Aberdeen on a season-long loan but endured a difficult spell with the Scottish side, managing just three goals.

The Englishman, who negotiated for a four-year-deal with United in 2015 was once described as "one of the brightest young English prospects" by former club boss, Louis van Gaal.

However he went on to manage just two competitive appearances, and has not featured for the Red Devils for nearly four years.

He last played for the Old Trafford outfit in October 2015 during a League Cup fourth round defeat to Middleborough.

His career has since been riddled with recurring injuries and frustrating loan spells with Derby County, Brighton and Sheffield United.
