- The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has come out in defence of Pravin Gordhan
- The foundation has also called for Busisiwe Mkhwebane to be removed from her post
- The EFF, however, has slammed the foundation for its comments
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has said publicly that it believes Pravin Gordhan is innocent of the charges levelled at him by the Public Protector.
This comes after Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane published a report which found Gordhan guilty of improper conduct.
The charge related to Gordhan granting an early retirement payout to former deputy Sars boss, Ivan Pillay.
Additionally, the Kathrada Foundation has called for Mkhwebane to be removed from her role as Public Protector. The foundation alleges that her findings against Gordhan are politically-motivated and that she is serving the interests of a particular faction within the ANC.
Consequently, the foundation has expressed concerns about the Public Protector's competence and fitness for the role.
A spokesperson for the foundation said that the allegations against Gordhan had been tested on two other occasions and it was found that there was no substance to them, according to Eyewitness News.
Others have also pointed out the timing of the report, which was released the day before Cyril Ramaphosa's inauguration, and claimed it is suspicious. In the report, the Public Protector recommends that the president take disciplinary action against Gordhan.
As a result of their public criticism of Mkhwebane, the EFF has slammed the Kathrada Foundation. The party says the foundation's criticism is a challenge to the integrity of a Chapter 9 institution, Briefly.co.za has gathered.
