Lindiwe Sisulu, who was recently appointed as Human Settlement Minister, has called for urgent answers over the demolition of homes in Alexandra. Sisulu wants to know who authorised the incident, which sparked violent protests in the area.
Human Settlement Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has called for urgent action to be taken after homes were demolished by the Red Ants in Alexandra.
According to Eyewitness News, Sisulu has urged the City of Johannesburg to act quickly in identifying who authorised the destruction, wanting to know if the process had been done within the confines of the law.
Briefly.co.za reported earlier that at least 80 homes had been destroyed, following demands of residents put forward earlier this year.
Sisulu claims that the correct procedures had not been followed when the homes were removed.
Spokesperson Mogomotsi Mogodiri says that the department is working with stakeholders to ensure that peace is restored to the township:
“We want the City of Johannesburg to move with speed to ensure the investigation is completed. If there is any wrongdoing, consequence management must take place.”
Meanwhile, riled residents vowed to continue protesting the removal of the homes today.
