Instead, he says he will use these state funds to improve service delivery, such as purchasing more ambulances.

The response to Saul's announcement on social media was overwhelmingly positive.

Many Facebook users commented on the story to share their thoughts.

One user, Samuel Bila, wrote, " I have huge respect for this gentleman, I hope others can emulate this is how respect is earned simple."

Faith Baloyi agreed, writing, " This is the change we are looking for, so proud of him."

Citizens appeared to welcome Saul's crack down on VIP treatment for government officials. For example, the premier has said he will do away with blue light brigades, which have become a common fixture in South Africa in terms of treatment of government officials. 

"God bless his heart," wrote another user, Mari van Zijl. "May he become our next President! Way to go sir!"

Kasoone Julius summed up several comments by posting, "Northern Cape finally gets a leader, not a ruler."
