Update: SA's Steyn bags whopping R1.2m for record Comrades run

Gerda Steyn broke the Comrades Marathon record on Sunday and not only walked away with the title, but a massive cheque of more than a million Rand.

Briefly.co.za reported on Sunday that Gerda Steyn made Mzansi proud when she not only won the Comrades Marathon but she crushed the record.

Steyn broke the Comrades Marathon Women's Record by completing the race in under 6 hours. Gerda's time of 5:58:53 is something she can be very impressed with.

Steyn received a combined total of R1.2 million for the Comrades win, Sport24 reported. She was reportedly awarded R500 000 for winning the women's division of the Comrades and another half a million Rand for breaking the record.

On top of that, Steyn received R200 000 for being the first South African to finish. The men's winner, Edward Mothibi, walked away with R700 000 after he finished with a time of 5:31:33.

Taking to social media, Steyn said winning the Comrades was the greatest honour of her life.

"Being the Comrades winner is the greatest honor of my life!! Thank you to an entire nation for carrying me to the line!! #sizonqoba" she wrote.
