A traffic robber was recently nabbed by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) officials of the Lagos State Command in Oshodi and CMS. The robber in question had swallowed his victim’s wedding ring and even gone ahead to threaten to kill her. Three other suspected thieves were also arrested in this regard.
The man who stole and swallowed a wedding ring is a 19-year-old named Taofeek Adebayo. His accomplice, on the other hand, is a 20-year-old man named Toheeb Tijani. Both were arrested in Oshodi-Oke just after they robbed two ladies who were driving a grey Sienna bus on the road.
These women were robbed of a gold earring and a set of wedding rings. Two other suspects, 20-year-old Samson Oluwa and Michael Adamu, 22, were arrested at CMS, Lagos Island.
According to reports, on Friday, June 14, Taofeek and his partners pleaded with the two women in a Sienna to give them money for food. Thinking they were street beggars, the ladies offered them a N100 note but the suspects rejected the money contemptuously and went on to rob them.
The female driver of the Sienna who has chosen to be anonymous had this to say with regards to the incident: “My colleague and I were coming from Anthony and heading to Ilasa for our association’s meeting. Three of them came near our vehicle. There was traffic and we couldn't turn anywhere. We were scared. They said we should give them money for food. I reached out to my colleague to give me money.
“She gave me N100 which I gave them. They rejected it. One of them said, ‘eleyi ki I se owo ti wa’. I told them this is what I have. One of them pulled my left ear and removed my earring. Two of them turned to the other side of my vehicle. They threatened to waste us if we don’t give them money. ‘Where is the money’, they screamed at us. In a hurry to leave our car, they forced my friend to surrender her wedding ring.
“This yellow guy (the one identified as Taofeek Adebayo) took the first one and swallowed it in our presence. His colleague took the other one.”
Taofeek responded to the allegation levied against him in this manner: “I swallowed it but I have vomited it and handed it over to Young Boy (the third guy) when police were chasing us. I told him to hand over the rings to the ladies so that the police can release us but he absconded with the two rings and earring.”
It has been discovered that his accomplice Toheed Tijani is on the police's black list. Reports has it that he snatched a mobile phone from a commuter in traffic earlier in the day. With regards to the wedding ring case, Toheed said, "I have released the phone to the LASTMA officials standing in Oshodi Oke. They told me that RRS officers were looking for me to arrest me.”
The two other suspected traffic robbers were arrested around Friday midnight. They were found stealing from a stranded motorist around CMS, Lagos.
Commenting on this, the commissioner of police, Muazu Zubairu, said the police will not relent in its efforts towards making Lagos safe for law abiding citizens. The suspects in this case have been transferred to Makinde Police Division, Oshodi and SCID, Yaba.
Recently, a traffic thief who tried to steal from some passengers in a bus got punished after he was caught red-handed.
