Dirco says that Zindzi Mandela is not on the run
- The department says that Mandela is travelling alongside Banyana Banyana to France
- Minister Naledi Pandor has yet to decide what action should be taken regarding Mandela
The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) has said that Zindzi Mandela is is accompanying Banyana Banyana to their World Cup debut on Friday in France.
Mandela is attending the match in her capacity as ambassador to Denmark.
This comes as Naledi Pandor has tried to get hold of Mandela following her controversial tweets.
Mandela had tweeted about land reform, but used phrases such as "shivering white cowards" and "land thieves".
Her remarks caused a stir on social media and drew a significant backlash from some organisations and members of the public. Others, like the EFF, rallied to Mandela's side.
According to IOL, Dirco spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele said that Mandela was not on the run. Ngqengelele added that Pandor had not yet made a decision as to how to deal with Mandela.
However, the spokesperson said that it would be determined in the coming days whether Mandela had violated the department's social media policy.
In the meantime, several Afrikaner groups - such as AfriForum and National Front of South Afrikaner - have called for Mandela to be dismissed from her post.
The latter group has reportedly written a letter to the Queen of Denmark regarding the issue, Briefly.co.za has gathered.
