- Bafana Bafana suffered a 1-0 loss in their opening encounter against Ivory Coast at Afcon 2019
- Jonathan Kodjia struck the only goal of the game as Bafana were largely restricted to counter-attacking opportunities only
- South Africans took to social media to share their frustrations on where the team went wrong
Afcon 2019 got off to a disastrous start for South Africa as Bafana Bafana were beaten in their opening encounter.
Ivory Coast beat Bafana 1-0 as Jonathan Kodjia struck the solitary goal of the game.
The African sun blazed down in Cairo, making it hard for the players to play with sustained pace, and Bafana were largely feeding off counter-attacking opportunities.
Lille forward, Nicolas Pepe, lived up to his reputation as a prodigious talent as he harassed the Bafana defence, with Ivory Coast nearly scoring again as a result of his efforts.
Bafana’s next match takes place on Friday, June 28, but it seems social media users are already predicting doom and gloom.
Briefly.co.za earlier reported on the predictions from the South African public and it seems many were spot-on when they predicted a lacklustre performance.
Briefly.co.za noted that the news of the loss was shared via the Bafana Bafana Twitter account and tweeps reacted angrily to the result.
