PSL increases prize money to R15m for the Premiership champs

- The cash prize for the winners of the Absa Premiership now sits at an impressive R15 million

- It has increased by 50% from last year

- In total, the event will hand out almost R40 million in prize money

The prize money for the ABSA Premiership has increased by 50% to a whopping R15 million, up from R10 million in 2018.

The increase was announced this week by PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza.

Additionally, the team that finishes in second place will win R7.5 million, while the team which claims third place will get R3.75 million.

In fact, all of the top 10 teams will win a cash price. The smallest prize, for tenth place, sits at R440 000. This means that, in total, almost R40 million in prize money will be handed out. Altogether, this means that spending on prize money has gone up by 35% since last year. 

Along with the prize increase, Khoza also announced the fixture for the event, according to Times Live. He briefed a member from the Premier Soccer League's headquarters in Parktown, Johannesburg. 

The opening matches include games between Orland Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic, as well as Stellenbosch United versus Chippa United.

Mamelodi Sundowns will also go toe-to-toe with SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium, has gathered, while Kaizer Chiefs will take on Highlands Park.

The tournaments kicks off on Saturday, 3 August.
