Thembinkosi Lorch's late goal helped Bafana Bafana reach the quarterfinal after defeating hosts Egypt’s Pharaohs 1-0 at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals on Saturday, July 6, Cairo International Stadium
The encounter saw Lorch making his debut appearance at the tournament, replacing suspended Themba Zwane, with Dean Furman returning to the middle of the pack.
In the fourth minute, Egypt had the first chance to net the opener from Ahmed El-Mohamady cross into the box, with the ball deflecting off Thulani Hlatshwayo for Mohamed Salah, but his first-time strike went off target.
South Africa had their turn to score in their first goal bound move in the 15th minute, through a counter-attack from a Furman pass to Thamsanqa Mkhize on the right, with the ball getting to Percy Tau, but his strike towards goal was saved by Pharaohs' shot-stopper Mohamed El-Shenawy.
In the 21st minute, Tau curled a decent ball towards the top corner, but El-Shenawy was spot-on to tip the ball over the crossbar.
None of the teams we able to break the deadlock going into the break as the scoreboard read Egypt 0-0 South Africa at halftime.
Bafana Bafana came into the second half more brightly, getting more players in the final third, but the Pharaohs almost scored in a fast counter-attack through Salah after an assist from Trezeguet before Ronwen Williams saved his shot.
In the 60th minute, Tau came close again to net the opener after an intelligent dummy, but his effort went off target.
Lorch attempted a volley away at goal which could not hit target. Mokotjo also had a chance inches wide of the right-hand upright from a decent assist by Mothiba.
Trezeguet had an opportunity at other end from Salah’s assist released but he could not beat Williams.
South Africa was close again in the 70th minute after a foul on Mokotjo by Ayman Ashraf.
Lorch took responsibility of the set-piece to find Hlatshwayo, but his header went off target, with scores still 0-0.
With five minutes to the end of regulation time, Bafana Bafana netted the winner, from a fast counter-attack move from Mothiba, who connected Lorch with a decent pass, leaving the Orlando Pirates forward to strike the ball beyond the reach of El-Shenawy.
Bafana Bafana held on to claim a vital 1-0 win and send Pharaohs packing from the tournament.
South Africa will now square up against Nigeria in the quarterfinal clash on Wednesday, July 10, at Cairo International Stadium.
