Less than 3 hours after South African National Fooball Team, Bafana Bafana, secured their 1-0 win against the host team, Egypt, the Egypt Football Association President announced his resignation and fired the Egyptian national team’s coach.

Bafana’s win, achieved in the 16th round of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament, meant that the host country’s team, Egypt, was knocked out immediately.

According to The Citizen, Egypt Football Association President, Hany Abo Rida, told the press that his resignation was a:

“… moral obligation, although the football association had given the national team full material and moral support.“

As Abo Rida announced his resignation, he also shared the firing of Javier Aguirre, the Egyptian team’s Mexican-born coach.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Aguirre took the fall for the team, placing the sole blame for the defeat on himself.

“The game was open and saw many chances. The only difference was that South Africa managed to score,” Aguirre admitted to the press.
