Gun Free SA believes that the only way to drop Mzansi's murder rate is to destroy all unlicensed firearms. The lobby group, which advocates removing guns from public use, says that the high murder figures are unacceptable.
Gun Free SA wants all unlicensed firearms to be destroyed, claiming that it is the only way to relieve SA's high murder rates.
Commenting on the grim situation, in which 23 people are killed each and every day, the lobby group says:
“It is globally recognised that destroying excess, unwanted and recovered firearms, ammunition and firearm parts is the only way to guarantee that these are not leaked into the illegal pool of weapons. By not destroying these guns, the police fail the public and South Africa as a whole.”
The South African reports that this results in a loss of confidence, with citizens who own unwanted guns opting not to hand them into the police:
"Instead, they remain in people’s home, where they can be used in domestic violence and suicide or be stolen by house robbers.”
The group has made submissions, attempting to have laws changed regarding gun ownership in South Africa. They are calling for weapons to be marked, verified and added to a database linking them to an owner.
