In a tragic incident, the father of a Hawks detective was gunned down in Melkbosstrand yesterday morning. The unit confirmed that Nici Heerschap, 74, was shot twice in his car and passed away on the scene.
Captain Philani Nkwalase has confirmed the death of a Cape Town-based detective's father after a shooting yesterday morning.
According to News24, the 74-year-old was gunned down on a property he shares with his son. Heerschap was shot twice in his vehicle near his home.
No arrests have been made, but Nkwalase says they are investigating who was behind the shooting, as well as the motive behind the murder.
While no links have been made between the death of the elderly man and his son's investigations, Detective Heerschap is expected to testify in a firearms case and is also investigating figures in gang circles and the underworld for firearm fraud and other illicit activity.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the province was plagued by high incidents of gangsterism and violence, with 11 murders reported on the past weekend alone.
Despite this, Police Minister Bheki Cele says that the situation is under control, with calls for the army to intervene in the matter to put a swift end to the dangerous situation.
