- Tanzanian President John Magufuli wants the nation's women to set their 'ovaries free'
- The politican seems to think this will help boost the economy into a regional powerhouse
- However, critics say this will have the opposite effect, worsening inequality and poverty
President John Magufuli wants Tanzania's women to go forth and procreate, allegedly to boost the nation's economy:
"When you have a big population you build the economy. That's why China's economy is so huge. I know that those who like to block ovaries will complain about my remarks. Set your ovaries free, let them block theirs."
While Magufuli has managed to boost economic growth with his industrialisation campaign, he feels that a higher birth rate will speed up progress.
However, opposition leaders in the country have condemned the notion, saying that the current rapid population growth is a time bomb waiting to go off, reports IOL.
A rights activist based in the nation's capital, who wished to remain anonymous, commented
"High population growth in Tanzania means increased levels of poverty and income inequality. Women's ovaries should never be used as a tool for seeking economic prosperity."
