Bafana Bafana were beaten 2-1 by Nigeria in the Afcon knockout match on Thursday.

Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring for the Super Eagles, but Bongani Zungu equalised for South Africa with a looping header.

South Africa drew level late in the game as VAR came into play and supporters thought it was written in the stars.

Just as it seemed that extra time was on the cards, Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong scored the winner.

The result sparked a huge reaction via social media as heartbroken South Africans aired their views.

Former Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, is known for his tough stance on Bafana, but he shared some encouraging words on this occasion.

Many South African supporters agreed that their stress levels went through the roof as they watched the team play.

Sadly, numerous tweeps were quick to ridicule the team and labelled them ‘mabena mabena’.

Nigerian supporters made their voices heard as they milked their team’s victory.
