- Stuart Baxter has said that Bafana Bafana can compete with the best in Africa.
- Despite his side's dramatic 2-1 defeat to Nigeria, he remains proud.
- He called on South Africans to support the squad.
A last-minute winner by centre-back Troost-Ekong from a corner broke South African hearts and saw Bafana Bafana knocked out of the tournament.
Baxter said that although he couldn't find positives in defeat, the team has shown that they can compete with Africa's best. In the post-match interview, he said:
"The team has done as well as many people thought it could do."
Baxter went on to say that this was part of the process.
"That should give us motivation and I hope that the people of South Africa will support them."
Briefly.co.za previously reported that Bafana Bafana were beaten 2-1 by Nigeria in the Afcon knockout match yesterday. Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring for the Super Eagles, but Bongani Zungu equalised for South Africa with a looping header.
Just as it seemed that extra time was on the cards, Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong scored the winner. The result sparked a huge reaction via social media as heartbroken South Africans aired their views.
