Police Minister Bheki Cele unleashed the South African National Defence Force on the crime-ridden streets of the Cape Flats this morning. President Cyril Ramaphosa has green-lighted the deployment of troops to the Western Cape.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has President Cyril Ramaphosa behind him in his efforts to put an end to violent crime in the Western Cape.
Cele is adamant that the situation cannot continue, revealing his intention to deploy armed forces in the region during his budget speech in Parliament yesterday, reports eNCA.
This morning, as early as 2am, Cele was on the ground to direct the masses of police and army officers in the area.
This follows a bloody weekend in Philippi and Hanover Park, which saw 13 lives taken in supposedly hit-style murders.
The crimes were linked to gangsterism, a consistent and complicated issue in the province, with National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole pledging to deploy key agents to the Philippi East station.
