Lefa Rapanyane, a 9-year-old girl from Pretoria, recently underwent a complicated procedure in order to regain her precious sense of sight.
Lefa’s eyesight started deteriorating rapidly when she was a grade 2 learner and her parents, understandably, panicked.
John Madisa, Lefa’s father, was worried that his little girl would never be able to see again, Health24 reported.
When Lefa’s parents took her to a doctor to receive a prognosis, the medical professional told them that the child was legally blind.
“I was so stressed and worried about my daughter because she couldn’t do a small thing such as see what we were having for supper… Watching my own child go through that was really painful,” John told YOU Magazine.
Luckily, Lefa’s parents kept being hopeful about her situation, and with the support of their community and a team of doctors, Lefa was able to find the perfect ophthalmologist, Dr Ebrahim Mia, to help her.
Briefly.co.za gathered that, after testing Lefa’s eyes, Dr Ebrahim recommended that she receive cornea transplants in both eyes.
This would cost Lefa’s parents over R30 000 for each eye.
“The family appealed to the Netcare Foundation for assistance to cover their medical costs … Once their case was approved, Lefa underwent a successful transplant of her left cornea in 2018 … A couple of months after the procedure the patient’s left eye healed well,” Dr Ebrahim explained.
With the help of Netcare and Dr Ebrahim, what started as a terrifying journey for little Lefa has ended in an inspiring story for all of Mzansi.
“The words ‘thank you’ can never be enough to show how grateful I am, to everyone who assisted in Lefa’s newfound gift of sight,” John gushed.
