The SAPS has shared that a famous South African actor and two others were arrested on charges of impersonating police officials, kidnapping and extortion.

The trio was apprehended on Friday, 12 July and will appear in the Booysens Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 July.

The arrests were made during an operation by the Hawks at South Gate Mall, south of Johannesburg. The suspects were allegedly trying to extort money from a businessman.

Briefly.co.za gathered that the business was contacted by one of the suspects in June.

A meeting was arranged in Isando, but the owner was pressured into driving with the suspect to Klopperpark.

What followed sounds like something from a 'dirty cops' Hollywood film.

The man was taken to a house where the suspect took out diamonds and placed it on a table. The two other suspects suddenly appeared as police officers.

The three went on to demand R100 000 from the frightened businessman or he'd face charges of an illegal diamond deal.

They took the money he had on him and demanded to see his bank balance. Then they forced him to withdraw money from his account - a total of R31 000.

The man reported the incident to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team on Wednesday.

A drop-off of the demanded money was arranged at South Gate Mall, and one of the suspects were arrested after entering the businessman's vehicle to collect the money.

The other two were apprehended after they tried to flee the scene and a chase ensued.

According to the police, the suspects face seven charges of impersonating police officials, extortion, theft, kidnapping, corruption, defeating the ends of justice and aiding a criminal.

The identities of the men remain confidential for now.
