Musa Maluleka is already doing his bit to alleviate the unemployment rate in Atteridgeville at the tender age of 19.

Maluleka saw a need in his township and created a durable brand of soccer boots, named Disktjie, that are more suited to township conditions.

The youngster found a company in China to manufacture the boots in 2018 and is already supplying the foreign market as well, with orders being placed from clients based in Congo.

IOL reported that Maluleka started his business with funds that he’d been saving since Grade 1.

At that stage, his allowance was a meagre R2, but his mother increased it by R5 whenever he passed with flying colours.

His mother presented the savings to him upon enrolling at Wits University, but the wheels were set in motion while he was in Grade 11.

Maluleka revealed his inspiration when he said, “In my township, we play soccer on gravel pitches and I realised there were no boots made specifically to withstand that environment.”

The 19-year-old is currently studying accounting sciences with a view of being better positioned to manage Disktjie going forward.

He said, “Growing up in the township is what has driven me; I didn’t want my environment to break me. Being a top achiever at school has exposed me to so many opportunities and meeting up with people who inspire you to be a better person.”
