- Johnny Clegg's family has requested fans make a donation to a worthy cause instead of sending flowers
- The family chose The Click Foundation to receive the donations
- A private funeral will be held for Clegg to uphold the family's request for privacy and a public memorial will be decided on at a later date
Tributes and condolences continue to pour in from across the world for Johnny Clegg and his loved ones, but his family has a simple request, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a worthy cause.
Clegg’s manager, Roddy Quin, confirmed yesterday that the veteran singer was surrounded by loved ones when he died on Tuesday afternoon at his home in Johannesburg.
The legendary musician was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and according to Quin succumbed to the illness yesterday. Quin said Clegg “fought till the end”.
“The last few weeks have been very tough for him. He has been very strong. He fought it till the last second,” said Quin.
According to TshisaLive, Clegg’s family thanked the world for the overwhelming support they have received in a statement issued on Wednesday morning.
The publication said the family made a special request that instead of sending or laying flowers, fans could make donations to The Click Foundation, which is responsible for facilitating online English literacy programmes in underprivileged schools in SA.
Donations can be made through htpps://www.friendsofjohnnyclegg.com/donate/ (Click Foundation Trust, First National Bank, account number 6238 8059 183, Swift Code: FIRNZAJJ)
Clegg’s family plans to have a private funeral and asked for privacy.
“His passing has left us numb and we request that the family’s privacy be respected during this trying time.
“There will be a service for the public to pay their respects and details hereof will be announced in due course,” read the statement.
