EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu has denied having a business relationship with billionaire Johann Rupert.

This comes as journalist Pieter du Toit claims in his book Stellenbosch Mafia: Inside the Billionaire's Club that the two had a "cozy" relationship.

In the book, Du Toit claims that Rupert and some of his associates financially support the EFF.

Du Toit says that Rupert also passed information along to the EFF, and that he and Shivambu had business meetings at a luxury Stellenbosch wine estate.

These allegations are notable as the EFF has frequently slammed billionaires such as Rupert. The party has made a name for itself by railing against 'white monopoly capital', in particular.

However, Shivambu took to Twitter to rubbish these claims, Briefly.co.za has gathered. Shivambu also posted screenshots of what appears to a WhatsApp exchange with Du Toit. In the messages, Shivambu declines to comment on the allegations of his association with Rupert.

Since then, the EFF has also released an official statement in which they deny the claims about Shivambu and Rupert, according to Times Live. Julius Malema himself weighed in on Twitter, too, where he hit out at Du Toit over the claim.

"You never stop with your rubbish," the EFF leader tweeted. "I think you wanted to say Solly Mapaila." He was referring to the SACP deputy secretary-general, another figure with whom Malema has sparred in the past.
