A man has taken to social media to share an emotional story of how his mother used to shield him from poverty. In the emotional post he explained how his mom used to boil water in pots on the stove until they fell asleep. This was to create an illusion that there was food in the house, when in fact, there was none.
Twitter user Rudolph Mpanyana's post read:
"My mom used to boil water, pretending to cook until we fall asleep, kanti vele there was no food at all... Struggle."
His story both saddened and inspired Mzansi social media users who shared similar stories of disadvantaged upbringings.
"I know some people won't believe you. I do, cause my aunt once did that same thing one night."
While Mandisa189 said:
"A few days ago my granny told me something similar. She said back in the days a wise woman would boil rocks and if the kids ask when the food is getting ready she'd keep on saying "soon" until the kids fall asleep. Yoh I shed a tear."
Wanda_sox also shared a similar painful story:
"I know this exactly fam, one day I looked at what she was cooking I found that they were rocks and pretended I felt asleep, she turned off the gas and prayed for better days. I woke up full the following day."
