The South African government is currently working on a law that would see harsher punishments for those who lie on their CVs.
While the thought of someone embellishing their work history doesn't seem that far-fetched, some cases have seen companies suffering massive damage after hiring someone who wasn't cut out for the job, The Citizen reports.
Many companies have resorted to carrying out background checks, but the government is working on a law that will see offenders in some seriously hot water.
Adjustments are currently being made to the existing laws on the National Qualifications Amendment Bill.
These changes will mean that registered qualifications of every South African will be monitored by the South African Qualification Association.
Managing director of D&K Management Consultants, Kyle Condon, commented on the changes:
“These adjustments are just what we need to lessen the instances of dishonesty on applications. The truth is we can’t always be sure why these lies are being added to CVs. In extreme cases, these may even be criminals that have been dishonest on their CVs to gain access to companies’ secure information or assets.”
Should the adjustments be passed into law, a person could be liable to a fine, a five-year prison sentence or both.
If found guilty, an offender who owns a business may also be forced to close down the company and be declared unfit to register a new company for up to 10 years.
Condon is adamant that this law seeks to protect more than it aims to cause harm, saying that:
“This Bill helps to protect the integrity of the hiring process by hopefully deterring dishonest applicants. In the meantime, it is critical that labour brokers and businesses in the process of hiring seek out the services of professional investigation and risk management consultants, to conduct background checks, screening and vetting of any candidates – before they make any appointments."
