- Some on social media have claimed that there is currently a trial underway concerning an attempt to murder Jacob Zuma
- A picture has circulated online purporting to show the suspects in court
- However, the image is actually from 2012
An image has been doing the rounds on social media purporting to show suspects on trial for attempting to assassinate Jacob Zuma.
The picture was accompanied by a caption which read: "These man are standing trial for plotting to Kill #JacobZuma & other senior ANC leaders. They appeared in court yesterday. The silence of media is sickening."
However, the image is not new but actually dates back to 2012.
The picture does show men who were standing trial on charges of treason and terrorism relating to a plot to kill the former president and several other senior ANC figures, Briefly.co.za has gathered.
However, the caption implied that the picture showed recent events. Instead, the trial took place several years ago. Two of the suspects were sentenced to eight years in prison in 2012, while a third was found to be mentally unfit to stand trial and a fourth was acquitted due to a lack of evidence, according to AFP Fact Check.
The image appears to have been shared once again as a result of Zuma's claims at the Zondo Commission last week that there have been attempts on his life in recent months. Zuma also told the commission that he had received death threats over the phone.
