Angered community caught on camera assaulting police officers

Police have condemned an attack on officers in Burgersfort, Limpopo. The community had allegedly demanded that murder suspects should be handed over to them for 'punishment'.

A video depicting an angry mob attacking police officers has gone viral, prompting outcry from the authorities.

National police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo commented that an 'angry and violent' mob had attacked police officers outside of a magistrate's court. The mob had reportedly gathered to demanded murder suspects be handed over to them for 'punishment'.

Naidoo explains that when Public Order Policing had arrived at the scene they were attacked by the community. This resulted in one female officer being dragged on the ground and assaulted, following which the police were pelted with stones.

Steelburger News reports that the mob had gathered at the court for the murder trial of school teacher, Precious Magabane, which has been postponed.

Naidoo explained that the officers had withdrawn as part of standard procedure, opting to use stun grenades to disperse the crowd. Luckily, only the female officer sustained minor injuries.

National police commissioner General Khehla Sitole had condemned the actions of protesters, commenting:

“The behaviour of the community before and during the attack of the police officers is clearly an attempt at undermining the State.”
