Baxter said the decision to step down with immediate effect was a personal one he made on his own.
South Africans were left divided by the news but those who felt Baxter failed welcomed it. Taking to social media, football fans nominated who they believe should succeed Baxter.
So, we decided to take a look at some of Mzansi's favourite coaches.
Goodman Kuvukiland, who goes by the Twitter handle @Gman_Kuvukiland, commented: "Can we have our very own Benni McCarthy to take over this Bafana Job? But on the hand Danny Jordan is seemingly to be rooted problem in the Association."
Some Bafana fans vouched for Manchester United coach José Mourinho to come to SA to train the national team.
