12-year-old Kheris Rogers made history at her young age when she became the world's youngest New York Fashion Week designer after she launched her clothing brand ‘’Flexin In My Complexion''.
After Rogers was humiliated in school, during an assignment, when the students had to draw themselves and the teacher handed the shy dark-skinned girl a black crayon instead of a brown one, which reinforced undercurrent discrimination against her skin tone.
Briefly.co.za learnt that Kheris Rogers was the darkest of all them in her class at the time, in a class of African American students.
The stunning 12-year-old had earlier transferred from another school to escape the incessant bullying bit it didn't work.
Rogers’ complexion set her apart, a label she couldn't shed.
However, Rogers currently owns her clothing line christened "Flexin In My Complexion". And her established brand has caught the attention of notable celebrities.
The young CEO turned to her grandmother for some encouraging words when she was bullied and "Flexin in your complexion" was the advice that made the shy girl own her self-worth and feel beautiful in her own skin, if only for a moment.
Little did Rogers or her grandmother know that those words which later became a family line would become a hashtag, #FlexinInHerComplexion.
When Roger's sister, Taylor Pollard, first tweeted the hashtag along with some family photos, the response was overwhelming.
Twitter users complemented Roger's skin and hair, saying she was beautiful. Many said they had been through similar bullying and teasing for their skin colour when they were young.
"When she saw those comments, she was like, 'Oh my god, this is what people really think about me",' Pollard in an interview.
That was when the two sisters decided to put their message, "Flexin' In My Complexion," on T-shirts and started the business in late April of 2017, which has since taken off.
Roggers and her sister sold over 10,000 shirts and made over $100,000.
Not long after the shirts first went on sale, rapper Snoop Dogg posted about Rogers on Instagram.
Singer Alicia Keys messaged Rogers to tell her she had bought a shirt from the business, Pollard said.
Then in September of 2017, actress Lupita Nyong'o posted a photo of herself wearing a "Flexin' In My Complexion" shirt on Instagram.
Rogers participated in Harlem Fashion Week in New York, and went on Steve Harvey's show "Steve."
But the best was yet to come, Nike featured Rogers in an ad.
"We didn't expect the picture to go viral at all. We just thought it was going to get a couple of retweets," She adds. "It's crazy how people want to buy my clothing line."
For now, Rogers hopes her work would inspire people to appreciate and love who they are, especially young black girls.
