An investigation has been launched after a Westville Girls' High teacher told students that white people are 'genetically smarter' than people of colour.
A matric class meant to be learning about Afrikaans was instead given a questionable genetics lecture by their teacher.
The teacher had reportedly claimed that white people are 'genetically smarter' than other races, reports IOL.
While pupils did not immediately take action, a source commented that some were distraught following the lesson.
Chairperson of the governing body, Steven Tait, confirmed the incident, commenting that:
“We take any incidents of this nature very seriously. The incident has triggered an internal investigation by the school and we’re also seeking external legal advice. At this stage I can’t talk specifically on the case. Our priority is the girls and creating a good, safe learning environment for them.”
Thirona Moodley, on behalf of the National Professional Teachers' Organisation of SA, is adamant that such a teacher had no place in a school, commenting:
“We would have hoped the school would have workshopped their teachers to not make any more controversial comments, and on appropriate conduct."
The Department of Education reiterated previous comments that racism in any form will not be tolerated, indicating that any teacher guilty of such will 'face the music'.
