As we approach Women's Day, we look to celebrate South African women who have made extraordinary achievements. One such woman is Sinothando Tiso, who was able to accomplish her dreams even under difficult circumstances.
Sinothando grew up in a small town in the Eastern Cape. She is the first university graduate in her family. This great achievement was a result of hard work and many sacrifices made.
“I was raised by my late grandmother who took care of me. My parents worked day and night trying to make ends meet."
She said that she was grateful to her family for their support. The young woman graduated from UKZN with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. And thanks to her place in Engen’s Graduate Development Programme, she is employed in Engen’s Lubricants Technical Department in Cape Town.
She was first introduced to her love for sciences when she attended the Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS). She joined the EMSS while in high school and attended lessons every Saturday.
Like most ambitious young people, Sinothando dreams of career success and improving her knowledge. She says that her biggest goal is to build her parents a beautiful house. The engineer wished to share her success with them in every possible way
“ I will measure my success by the size of the smile on their faces.”
She believes that life is there for the taking and that determination and grit play a big role.
