- A friend of the Meyiwa family passed away following the memorial service for Sam Meyiwa
- Paramedics declared the man, Ngengelezi Mnikathi, dead on the scene
- This is the latest in a series of tragedies to strike the Meyiwa family
Ngengelezi Mnikathi, a close family friend of the Meyiwa family, passed away over the weekend.
Mnikathi suddenly collapsed while sitting with the Meyiwas at their home following the memorial service for Sam Meyiwa.
Sam Mewiya was the father of slain Orlanda Pirates player, Senzo Meyiwa.
Mnikathi had reportedly struggled with high blood pressure prior to his passing, Briefly.co.za has gathered. The family says he passed out at the function, which took place in Umlazi M section in KwaZulu-Natal. A family friend says they poured water on him in an attempt to wake him up but he remained unresponsive. According to the Daily Sun, this was when the family called an ambulance.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and declared Mnikathi dead immediately.
This is the latest in a series of tragedies for the Meyiwa family. Senzo was shot and killed during a robbery in 2014. While one suspect was arrested, the man was later let go due to a lack of evidence.
The incident sparked outrage among many citizens and Meyiwa's family expressed disappointment with what they saw as a lack of justice for their son.
