Minister Pravin Gordhan has dubbed Brian Molefe's Constitutional Court loss an 'important victory'. This comes as the former Eskom CEO was ordered to repay R11 million after he illegally awarded himself an early retirement package.
Ex-Eskom boss Brian Molefe's failure to appeal against the ruling that he illegally granted himself early retirement is a win as far as Minister Pravin Gordhan is concerned.
Briefly.co.za reported that Molefe had been ordered to repay portions of the R30 million pension payout he received when he resigned as CEO in 2016.
Gordhan commented that this was a victory against those who benefited from state capture:
“It is a very important victory and there will be many more like that because not only are we trying to get our institutions right, I think what the public wants us to do and work with us on is to track where did all the other monies go and how we go about retrieving all that money."
Molefe had avoided repaying R11 million back to the cash-strapped entity with a string of court cases and appeals, but the apex court has effectively squashed any chances he had of retaining his ill-gotten riches.
