Mashaba must go nowhere - DA responds to calls for mayor's removal

The ANC is set to table a motion of no confidence in Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba later this month in attempt to remove Mashaba from office.

The party says that the metro has gone bankrupt and corruption has flourished under Mashaba's leadership.

As a result, #MashabaMustGo began to trend on social media, but the DA was having none of it.

The DA Gauteng's offical Twitter page took on those calling for Mashaba's removal, has gathered. The party began posting lists of Mashaba's achievements to counter the mayor's critics.

The party pointed out that the metro's finances actually improved during Mashaba's time in office. They also claim that 19% of the metro's budget was looted while the ANC was in charge of the city.

This echoes statements that Mashaba himself has made. He maintains that the ANC wants him gone because his administration has been clamping down on corruption and investigating corruption cases - including cases involving ANC members.

Members of the public also weighed in on the proposal to boot Mashaba from the mayor's office.

One social media user, Godfrey Hulela, described Mashaba as "the best thing to happen to this city to date". Another, Natt Aubrey, suggested the anti-Mashaba hashtag must have bee started by a "desperate delusional ANC tenderpreneur".

Sne Ndlovu added that she was not a DA supporter, but believed that Mashaba was "working hard for Jhb".
